other與others 的區別

1. 從是否確指來(lái)看
other和others均表示不確指意義，其中other后可以修飾名詞，而others后不能再接名詞，兩者的關(guān)系可描述為：others=other+復數名詞。如：
He never thinks of others. 他從來(lái)不為別人著(zhù)想。
I don’t like these books. Show me some others. 我不喜歡這些書(shū)，再拿一些給我看。
第一句中的others=other people，意為“其他人”“別人”，泛指其他所有人；第二句中的others=other books，意為“其他的書(shū)”。
但是，若要表示確指意義，我們就在other和others前面使用定冠詞，同樣地，other后可以修飾名詞，而others后不能再接名詞，兩者的關(guān)系仍然存在the others=the other+復數名詞。如：
I started last in the race but I soon caught up with the others. 我在賽跑中最后一個(gè)起跑，但不久就趕上了其他人。
句中的the others=the other people，意為“其他人”，其中的定冠詞特指參加賽跑的所有其他人。
注意：the other后除接復數名詞外，還可以接單數名詞，此時(shí)不能用the others代替。如：
This seat is free; the other seat is taken. 這個(gè)座位空著(zhù)，那個(gè)座位有人。
2. 常用慣用表達
①one...the other表示“(兩者中的)一個(gè)……另一個(gè)……”。如：
What I say goes in at one ear and out at the other. 我說(shuō)話(huà)他是一只耳朵進(jìn)，另一只耳朵出。
②one...the others表示“(好幾個(gè)中的)一個(gè)……其余都……”。如：
Of their five children, one is in China and the others are abroad. 他們有五個(gè)小孩，一個(gè)在中國，其余的都在國外。
注：若為三者，想要表示“一個(gè)……另一個(gè)……剩下的一個(gè)……”，可用one...another...the other [the third...]；若為四者，可用one...another...another [a third]...the other [the fourth, the last]。
③some...the others表示“一些……其他一些的……”。如：
The search party was divided into two groups. Some went to the right, the others went to the left. 搜尋小組一分為二，一部分向右，另一部分人向左。
④some…others表示“有的……有的……”。如：
Some people build while others destroy. 有些人建設而另一些人則破壞。
注：該結構也可說(shuō)成some…some。如：
Some of us agree, some disagree. 我們有些人同意，有些人不同意。
